Below left is a photograph of the solar system's largest canyon, Valles Marineris. Ten times as long and four times as deep as Earth's Grand Canyon,
it crosses almost an entire hemisphere. Below right is a composite of 42 photos of Mars taken a week apart. The apparent backward/retrograde
motion is because in its faster orbit the observer, Earth, laps the slower, outer moving planet Mars. This is the source of all planetary retrogradation.
