Current theory says our solar system began with a gravitationally contracting cloud of gas and particles called a "solar nebula". At its
center where gravity was highest a "protostar" formed that eventually shone under thermonuclear fusion. Around the protostar smaller
gravitational conglomerates became planets. Eventually the central star became hot enough to blow away all debris between the planets.
