The fourth house in astrology

Fourth house 3D astrology model

The Fourth House

The 12 houses can be subdivided into four groups: the angular houses (1st, fourth, 7th and 10th) that fall counterclockwise away from the horizontal and vertical angles in the above model; the succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) that follow them; and the remaining four cadent houses (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) immediately clockwise of the angles. The angular houses are by far the strongest group, and although the fourth house is an angular house it is the least prominent one.

Our emotional foundation and subconscious self-image based on early childhood experiences are established in the fourth house. The way we feel about ourselves is conditioned by our experience of our parents’ (or significant others’) acceptance or rejection of us as we were growing up. From these experiences we developed our sense of belonging and our capacity to receive—and/or a sense of alienation and a difficulty or frozenness in receiving.

The fourth house rules the home, our family as a child and as an adult, the nurturing parent and our early experience of being nurtured, our most personal and intimate life, real estate and property, and our heritage and ancestry. Here is where we send down roots and establish a base of operations, find our limits, and generally secure ourselves. It is the end of any searching we might have done in the third house, and thus rules the latter part of life. A planet here indicates the need for a stable emotional base in order to fill the needs of the house it rules. The more planets in this house, the more one tends to be subjective, personal, private or introverted.

A planet is said to rule a house when it is the ruler of the sign on the cusp or beginning of that house. Using this concept, locate the ruler of your fourth house, then notice the house it occupies. The house the fourth house ruler is in holds experiences to help you to feel emotionally secure and to fill home and family needs (fourth house). That's what the fourth-house ruler is doing in the house it occupies: gaining experience to fill the needs of the house it rules. The fourth-house ruler's aspects and sign show its ease or difficulty in fulfilling those fourth house needs. These principles are true of every house ruler and every planet. In this case, oppositions between the rulers or occupants of the fourth and tenth houses emphasize the value of establishing yourself in the world even though you have to balance your career with the needs of your home and family.

Famous individuals with a prominent fourth house (they have/had both the Sun and the natural ruler of the fourth house the Moon in the fourth) are/were Halle Berry, Marlon Brando, Yuri Chechi, Colette, Nancy Donnellan, William Faulkner, Robert Holley, Vicki Lawrence, Sybil Leek, Johnny Mathis, William McKinley, Robert Millikan, Vaslav Nijinsky, Peter O'Toole, Joe Perry, Carl Sandburg and Emile Zola.

Astronomically speaking, the fourth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky counter-clockwise from the nadir (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours before they reach the lowest point in the local sky.
