The Seventh House

The astrological houses can be divided into two groups: the first six are the personal houses in which we experience our self and develop and adjust our ego. Planets in those houses are below the horizon, so their energies are more personal and interior. The last six are the social houses in which we encounter the other and learn how to relate. Planets in those houses are above the horizon; their energies are more exterior and out in the world. The first of the social houses, the seventh, is also an angular house (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses), making it one of the four most significant houses in a horoscope.

The seventh house is opposed to the first house literally and in emphasis: in the first house we put our energies into the world; in the seventh the world puts energy back into us. The purpose of the seventh house is to bring about greater self-awareness through relating to what we experience as being outside of ourselves. This may in fact be energy within us that we have rejected out of fear or the need to experience it more objectively or externally. This is called projection, and we seek projected parts of ourselves in our intimate relationships.

Thus the seventh house rules intimate one-to-one relationships of all kinds including marriage, business and counseling relationships, open enemies and conflicts, lawsuits and the lower courts. Planets in the seventh house indicate areas in our lives that need relationships to bring them out, and the houses ruled by seventh house planets are those "areas." Many planets here indicate many needs that we are looking for others to fill. In this case many relationships or more than one marriage is probable, as itís unlikely that one individual would fill all those needs. Individuals with so much projected energy feel a void in their lives, and may encourage others to be dependent, or even pick fights rather than be alone.

Charles Baudelaire had five planets in the seventh house (four in Aries), and both Dean Martin and Mussolini had four planets there. Other celebrities with a strong seventh house (both the Sun and the natural ruler of the seventh house Venus in the seventh) are/were Charles Boyer, Barbara Bush, John Coltrane, Richard Crenna, Hermann Hesse, Adolf Hitler, Ivan the Terible, Stacy Keach, Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Charles Manson, Elizabeth Montgomery, Mchael Moriarity, Audie Murphy, LeAnn Rimes, Donald Rumsfeld, Bertrand Russell, Robert Stack, Johnny Weismuller and Yo Yo Ma.

A planet is said to rule a house when it is the ruler of the sign on the cusp or beginning of that house. Using this concept, locate the ruler of your seventh house, then notice the house it occupies. The house the seventh-house ruler is in holds experiences to help you to learn cooperation, form intimate partnerships and to satisfy your needs for intimacy and relationship (all seventh house). That's what the seventh-house ruler is doing in the house it occupies: gaining experience to fill the needs of the house it rules. The seventh-house ruler's aspects and sign show its ease or difficulty in fulfilling those seventh house needs. These principles are true of every house ruler and every planet. In this case, oppositions between the rulers or occupants of the seventh and first houses emphasize the value of putting yourself out into the world even though you have to balance self expression with your need to relate to and be intimate with others. And by the way, the cusp or the beginning of the seventh house is called the descendant, the sign on the seventh house cusp is the descendant sign, and the planet ruling the descendant sign is the descendant ruler.

The "natural ruler" of the seventh house is Venus, the ruler of the seventh sign Libra. Venus represents the energy of harmony and relatedness, and is therefore well placed in the seventh house of intimate one-to-one relationships; for more on Venus in the seventh house click here.

Astronomically speaking, the seventh house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just above the western horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets in the two hours just before they set.
