The twelfth house of 12 houses of astrology

Twelfth House 3D astrology model

The 12th House

The 12 houses can be subdivided into four groups. The strongest group is the angular houses (first, fourth, 7th and 10th houses) that fall counterclockwise away from the horizontal and vertical angles in the above model. The second strongest are the succedent houses (the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th). And the weakest group is the cadent houses (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) immediately clockwise of the angles; the twelfth house is one of these. Cadent houses are mental in nature and less fertile or productive than the angular or succedent houses. As the last house in each of the four quadrants they are related to the dispersal of the energies initiated and consolidated in the preceding angular and succedent house in that quadrant.

When a planet rises in the east it can now be seen -- and thus it enters the twelfth house. Just so, our first instances of self-expression that we offer into the world are vulnerable and easily defeated, but the effect of their success or failure on our personality is enormous. Pulling some of our energy back into our self to keep it from being defeated or overwhelmed has two results. If we are aware of what we are doing, it becomes our hidden secret. If this process is unconscious, it becomes a rejected aspect of the self. These secrets or repressed aspects of the self form the classical interpretation of the twelfth house.

But what if the immature energy we put into the world isnít defeated early on? Then it can become a source of strength and a dominant aspect of our personality, and even signify our career. The twelfth house is thus where we build inner strength to overcome limitations, sorrows and fears, and where the individual adapts to the collective. It signifies self-undoing: where we stand in our own way, where we are not free to let ourselves become and be who we essentially already are. It also represents that which is hidden, karma, limitation, confinement, prison, betrayal, sacrifice, hospitals and institutions, nuns and priests, secrets and secret enemies (who may just be rejected aspects of ourselves), initiation, ultimate understanding, and charity given or received.

J. K. Rowling has five planets in Virgo in the 12th house! Other distinguished individuals who have or had an accentuated twelfth house (both Sun and Jupiter in the twelfth) are/were Ann-Margaret, Eugene Boudin, Maria Callas, George Chisholm, David Copperfield, Nigel Hawthorne, Ronald Isley, Deborah Kerr, Pier Pelicci, Ross Perot, Patrick Rafter, Ariel Shaon, Leonard Slatkin, Jan Vayne and Keith Whitley.

A planet is said to rule a house when it is the ruler of the sign on the cusp or beginning of that house. Using this concept, locate the ruler of your twelfth house, then notice the house it occupies. The house the twelfth-house ruler is in holds experiences to help you to become more conscious of your repressed energy and feelings, find renewal in withdrawal, learn to get out of your own way, overcome your limitations, and be of real service to others (twelfth house). That's what the twelfth-house ruler is doing in the house it occupies: gaining experience to fill the needs of the house it rules. The twelfth-house ruler's aspects and sign show its ease or difficulty in fulfilling those twelfth house needs. These principles are true of every house ruler and every planet. Oppositions between the rulers or occupants of the twelfth and the sixth houses can highlight a conflict between serving yourself and serving others. This can manifest as finding the correct balance between your own growth and self-adjustment and being free enough to serve others where you have healed or completed yourself.

Astronomically speaking, the twelfth house is that one-twelfth sector of the local sky just above the eastern horizon (see above picture) occupied by planets during the two hours after they rise.
