Mars opposed Ascendant

Any planet conjunct one of the four angles is significant, and when that planet symbolizes ego energy, sexuality, and how you get what you want, it is very significant indeed. You were born as Mars was setting in the west. "Mars opposed the ascendant" is the same as Mars conjunct the descendant or seventh house cusp; it is from the latter perspective that this aspect will be interpreted. The descendant is a symbolic condensation point for what we don't identify with in ourselves and therefore project onto or seek out in others or through intimate relationships.

This placement of Mars usually manifests in one of two ways. One is that you express your aggressive drives and competitive urges within your intimate, one-to-one relationships. This can be positive and appropriate in a sexual context, but otherwise people can find you argumentative, uncompromising, and belligerent. You need to learn more tact and how to compromise if you want to get along with others and make your relationships last. The second way this manifests is that you seek out and attract aggressive and competitive partners. This is because, as mentioned above, you have a hard time getting a handle on your own aggressive energy and independence and seek others who exteriorize this otherwise buried aspect of your character. The nature what you are seeking in yourself and therefore in others would be described in the rest of this section on Mars in your copy of You and the Universe.

To the extent that you carry/carried unexpressed hostility or aggression, your partner is/was apt to be bad-tempered and hostile, for you need her or him to exteriorize this part of your being for you. And to this extent you had (or will still have) strife with business partners, and your aggressive behavior to superiors in the work place can sabotage your advancement. In general, settle any difficulties out of court, as this aspect bodes against you in that regard.

Famous people with a relatively strong (orb < 5) Mars conjunct descendant are/were Maya Angelou, Joseph Campbell, Christopher Darden, Bobby Fischer, Michael J. Fox, Brad Garrett, Judd Hirsch, Herbert von Karajan, William Kunstler, Monica Lewinsky, Malcolm X, Henry Mancini, Joe R. McCarthy, Carl Sandburg, Martin Sheen and Loretta Young.

When Mars is conjunct the descendant it can be in either the 6th or the 7th house. Mars in the sixth house and within 3 or 4 of the descendant is on the "dark side" of the 7th house cusp and expresses itself in both houses. As it moves even closer to the descendant while yet in the 6th house it expresses itself more and more predominantly through the 7th. Still in the 6th and within about 1-1 of the descendant it should be considered as being in the 7th house. This dark side effect is true of all the planets and all the angles.
